Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure where a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers. The skin that grows back is smoother and more youthful.

Before the Procedure

  • Consultation: Meet with a provider to determine the peel to address your concern

  • Preparation: Avoid sun exposure, waxing, and certain skincare products (like retinoids) for at least a week before the peel.

  • Clean skin: Arrive with clean skin, free of lotions, oils, makeup, or self-tanning agents.

During the Procedure

  • Cleansing: The skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove oils and impurities with acetone.

  • Barrier: Vaseline will be applied to corners of eyes, mouth and nose to protect product from entering these cavities

  • Application: The chemical solution is applied to the skin and will remain on the skin for four hours.

After the Procedure

  • Cooling: The skin may be cooled with a fan to soothe any discomfort.

  • Moisturizing: Following the instructions on chemical peel you will go through a series of cleansing and application of hydrocortisone.

  • Sun Protection: It's crucial to avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the new skin.

  • Peeling: Typically occurring on the 3rd/4th day post intializing the peel, your skin will start shedding naturally. Do not assist with removal of skin and allow it to flake off on its own. Assisting with peeling may result in skin damage

Risks and Considerations

  • Redness and Swelling: Common and can last from a few days

  • Scarring: Rare but possible, do not assist with peeling to avoid skin damage

  • Changes in Skin Color: Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation can occur, particularly in people with darker skin tones. Your provider may prescribe brightening treatments prior to peels. Avoiding the sun during for one week is key for prevention.

Infection: There's a risk of bacterial, fungal, or viral infections. Following the postcare peel instructions of regular cleansing, hydrocortisone application, and sunscreen application can minimize the risk of infection.
